Obituary.
July 2, 2004 Sister Hilda Bonham, who taught at Marygrove College and in a creative writing program at the University of Michigan, died Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Health Care Center in Monroe. She was 92 and had been a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, since 1937. Her name at birth was Florence Bonham. Beginning her career as a high school teacher, she taught at St. Mary of Redford in Detroit; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; St. Michael, Flint; St. Mary Academy, Monroe, and a school in Ohio during a 13-year span. In 1955, she went to Marygrove, were she taught English for 18 years. After two years teaching in Texas, she went to Ann Arbor, where she worked in the U-M Library, counseled and served as assistant to the chairman of the Avery Hopwood Creative Writing Program. She was also a social worker at Hill Nursing Home, Glacier Hills Nursing Center and other places in Ann Arbor. She retired in 1994. Sister Hilda was born in Geneva, Ala., grew up in Birmingham, Ala., and earned a bachelor's degree at Marygrove, a master's at St. Louis University and a doctorate at U-M. Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Deex, with whom she traveled the world.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at the IHM Motherhouse, 610 W. Elm Ave. in Monroe, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, on the Motherhouse grounds. The family suggests memorial donations to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe 48162.

Sister Hilda Bonham, Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, 92, died Monday at IHM Health Care Center. Friends may call from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at IHM Motherhouse, where a remembrance service will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday. Mass of the Resurrection will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse campus. Rupp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born Sept. 14, 1911, in Geneva, Ala., she was the daughter of William and Mary (Sholl) Bonham. She was given the name of Florence. She entered the IHM community in 1937, taking the religious name Sister Hilda. Surviving is her sister, Eleanor Deex.

Sr. Hilda was born in Geneva, Ala. and grew up in the Birmingham area. She attended Lakeview Elementary School and graduated from Phillips High School. Through a Marygrove student, Sr. Hilda became acquainted with the IHM community and became a member in 1937.
Sr. Hilda earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College, a master's degree from St. Louis University, and her PhD from the University of Michigan. Her teaching career spanned 13 years at St. Mary of Redford High School, Detroit; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; St. Mary, Akron, Ohio; St. Michael, Flint; and St. Mary Academy, Monroe. Sr. Hilda taught for 18 years at Marygrove College in Detroit and two years at Maryhill in Texas. Her publications consists of articles and book reviews. She traveled extensively all over the world with her sister, Eleanor Deex.
For 20 years Sr. Hilda ministered in Ann Arbor. She worked at the University of Michigan in several areas: the library, counseling, and as Assistant to the Chairman of the Avery Hopwood Creative Writing Program. From 1980 to 1994 she was a social worker at Hill Nursing Home, Glacier Hills Nursing Center, and a medical social worker at various places in Ann Arbor. Sr. Hilda retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 1994 and volunteered her services in many ways. She entered the Health Care Center in 2000 and resided there until her death. She was 92.
