Charlie and Joseph Schmalz were co-owners of a coal mine called the "Schmalz Brothers & Gack Mine". The owners were Joseph and Charlie Schmalz and Anton Gack. The mine was on the Gack's property. They lost the mine during the depression. In the early 1930's there were shipments of coal sent to Wisconsin and Chicago and the companies could not afford to pay for the coal, though they did receive some cotton seed meal from one of the companies. The mine was sold to Red Globe Mines.
