The 1910 Census indicates Jonathan's emigration date to the US is 1855. The 1920 Census indicates an emigration date of 1865. In his obituary it states he came to America in 1863. Jonathan would have been 15 in 1855 (pretty young but not impossible for a soldier if he indeed did serve in the British army before entering the US). The Civil War battles of Petersburg and Richmond took place in early April 1865 so an entry to the US in 1865 followed by a quick enlistment and assignment to the Army of the Potomac is possible. Since the obituary was written by his son, Ralph Lewis Deex, who was close to his father it is probably correct. - Arthur Deex

BEREA ENTERPRISE John H. Deex was born in Dovercourt, Essex, England, on May 24, 1840, and died after a short illness at Community Hospital on July 30, 1922, aged 82 years, two months and six days. He came to America in 1863 and immediately joined the Union army in Connecticut and was engaged at Richmond and Petersburg at the time of the evacutation of these cities by Lee. Shortly after the close of the Civil War he came to Berea, where he started work in one of the smaller quaries near the "Rocks." He was actively engaged in quarry work in Berea for half a centruy, and was an employee of the Cleveland Stone Company for over thirty years. He is survived by a widow, one daughter and four sons.

Obituary : Mrs Anna Deex, 73, nee Gable, passed away Friday morning, June 30, (1933) at the home of her son, Arthur Deex of Brook Park. Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Church Monday morning, July 3, with burial in Woodvale Cem. Mrs. Deex was born in Olmsted tp. and had been a life long resident of this community. For the past 36 years she lived at her home 22 Prospect St. She is survived by four sons and one daughter, Charles Deex, Cleveland, Arthur Deex, Brook Park, Mrs. W. O. Day, Cleveland Heights, Harry Deex, Berea, Ralph L. Deex, Berea.
